We're No. 2.... again (or "How I learned to stop griping and accept the BCS")

Man, one of these days people will figure out why the BCS rankings are useless midway through the regular season. Let me just give you an example, and you tell me if you can understand this concept:

I come up with a foolproof forecasting program based on sales data from a 13-week period in an industry that is known for its 13-week business cycles, meaning that different companies fluctuate in terms of their volume from week to week, but over a 13-week window, it generally levels out. (OK, fine, we're living in Fantasyland... just hear me out.)

About midway through the program, you see a company that to you is clearly the top choice. They are the top retailer every single year, they have the best staff, the best sales force, etc.... and yet they aren't ranked No. 1! How can this be, you say! The system is a farce! It just goes to show that your numbers are useless!

OK, I'm pretty sure none of you would say that, and we all know why. You have to take a full sample for a formula to work. Here's another example for those of us more comfortable working in the kitchen than the office - it's like me walking in on you while you're making a seven course dinner, and when I see a bunch of ingredients lying around in a mess my reaction is that you can't cook, none of this looks edible and why bother even finishing?

The point is that the BCS system (flawed though it may be - I'm not saying I like it) was never designed as a week to week ranking system. It's not supposed to be able to tell you who No. 1 is right now because it takes in elements like strength of schedule and opponents' strength of schedule. None of those will be fully decided until the season ends. So right now, the ranking is working on incomplete, imperfect data.

As it happens, USC is back at No. 1 this week, and Texas is No. 2. It doesn't matter!!!! All I care about as a Longhorn booster is being one of those top two teams after we finish the year unbeaten. Then we go to the Rose Bowl andit's all in our hands.

If you want to continue to keep tabs, here are the BCS standings. And here's everything you ever wanted to know about the BCS, but were either afraid to ask or thought you needed a Calculus degree to understand. It's a subscription site, but there's plenty of free information on there as well.

Did I mention that OU still stinks? :D

Hornfans - Ignore the smack-talk and there's some pretty good football discussion tucked away in there.
